Men's first game of the season v Leeds

The men travelled to Leeds last weekend to play their first game in NVL Division 1.   The game was immediately after the ladies game - so after a quick shower and some food the girls were on the side line to give some support.

With a number of new signings coach Freddie had options and the starting line up included a mix of old a new together with the first game of the Young brothers playing together (Jack as libero and Tom through four).  The team settled down and traded points with Leeds.  The pass enabled the team to open up options utilising four and middle well.  It was a scramble to the end and Leeds narrowly stole the set 25-23.

Disc Golf - winners

On a sunny September Saturday Riga volleyball Club descended onto Quarry Park Disc Golf Course for a friendly, fun (and competitive!) round of disc golf.  After dividing into three teams, Team 1 set off to hole one for some instruction and to try their hand at this sport.  Team 2 set off shortly after with Team 3 bringing up the rear.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to let us know you are coming (and how many family members) and whether you are coming to:-

  1. Both Disc Golf and drinks!
  2. Just Disc Golf
  3. Just drinks afterwards

The disc golf is £5 per person (£3 for children).

A group of Riga ladies from both teams headed to the annual Whitefield tournament in July.  Now becoming an annual favourite in the calendar the girls were out in full force for volleyball and socialising including Ruthie flying in from Canada for the tournament (as has become customary!).

We arrived Friday evening in the glorious sunshine and enjoyed the sights of Bath together with a lovely curry (and Indian Sauvignon Blanc) at a local curry house.  As we went to bed the weather was still fine and it was a lovely warm evening.  However, this was all set to change as we were awoken in the early hours of the morning by thunder and lightning!  That was set to continue throughout Saturday!

The ladies were not on first so tentatively arrived at the field to survey the floods of rain hammering down on the court!  The organisers did a great job of getting play under way though and with a few rain delays the teams all fought their way through the games.  Riga Team Harringtons had some great successes and also some difficult games, but the team spirit shone through and the girls placed well at the end of Saturday.

Wolston 2014 results

Sunday 14 July saw teams from across the Midlands (and a few from further afield) come together in Wolston for the annual Riga tournament.  Chris Nason (tournament director) opened the tournament by welcoming teams and confirmed the sad news that this will be the last time the tournament will be held at Wolston as the home is changing ownership shortly.  The Club is looking at alternative options for 2015 though so watch this space!

Riga Muppets entered this year's Sandwell tournament with a mixed team from the mens and the two ladies teams.  The weather had been beautiful until the Friday before when constant rain meant the Saturday was not looking good!  As we stepped onto the field though the first rays of sunshine came out and it was set to be a good day.

One team in the Riga Muppets' pool didn't brave the weather and was a no show!  Therefore, the tournament organisers re-jigged and we had two other teams to play (Green Gos and Katz) and we played each of them twice in the morning pool.  Riga's morning started with some true muppet moments (hence the team name!) as we remembered what volleyball was from the long season break.  The team managed to secure a 2-0 win in the first game though.  From that point on the team didn't look back winning all games in the pool and securing a slot in the semi-final.

The semi-final saw the team really start to click and we started steadily against Cheshire Sets.  It was good team play that saw the Riga Muppets take a comfortable victory.  However, had the team peaked too early prior to the final!  The final was against Sundorne.  Riga started off slightly unsettled and the two sides traded points displaying the tension of a final.  Riga remained calm though and played through as a team to take the set 25-23.

You are invited to this year's Club AGM.  Make sure you come along to have your say in the future of our club.  But, more importantly to join in the celebrations of the last 40 years!
