A group of Riga ladies from both teams headed to the annual Whitefield tournament in July.  Now becoming an annual favourite in the calendar the girls were out in full force for volleyball and socialising including Ruthie flying in from Canada for the tournament (as has become customary!).

We arrived Friday evening in the glorious sunshine and enjoyed the sights of Bath together with a lovely curry (and Indian Sauvignon Blanc) at a local curry house.  As we went to bed the weather was still fine and it was a lovely warm evening.  However, this was all set to change as we were awoken in the early hours of the morning by thunder and lightning!  That was set to continue throughout Saturday!

The ladies were not on first so tentatively arrived at the field to survey the floods of rain hammering down on the court!  The organisers did a great job of getting play under way though and with a few rain delays the teams all fought their way through the games.  Riga Team Harringtons had some great successes and also some difficult games, but the team spirit shone through and the girls placed well at the end of Saturday.

Later it was another beautiful evening and the girls headed out for cocktails and dinner at a local Italian.  A few more cocktails and the team was fully refueled ready for Sunday's play.  Sunday's weather was the absolute opposite as the sun shone bright and the sun tan lotion was applied.  Riga had a pool to play in the morning to determine whether they would make the semi-finals and finals.

The girls didn't look back in the morning winning all their games and setting them up for the semi-final in the afternoon.  After a slightly rocky start in the semi-final the girls were back under control and had a comfortable win in the sunshine.  A quick ice-cream break prior to the final against East Grinstead.  The final was tight with both teams playing well and the rallies were long and competitive.  Riga narrowly missed out with East Grinstead taking the first set 26-24.

The second set was equally tight.  Riga were slightly ahead throughout the set but failed to pull away and East Grinstead ensured that Riga were aware they were only a couple of points away at all times.  Riga managed to take the set 26-24 setting up the third set final thriller.  By now most other courts had finished and the organisers were packing away around us.  The intense heat was taking its toll on both teams but neither team was willing to ease off on the pressure and it was again a trading of points.  At the change of ends Riga were ahead and had a few points in their advantage.  However, East Grinstead showed they were a team with real fight pulling it back to levels again.  Eventually Riga found themselves on match point at 15-14.  An ace from Clare (somewhat of a flukey one it has to be said!) saw Riga take the set and be crowned WINNERS of Division 2.

A great weekend all round!  Their team name was after Harringtons on the Hill restaurant in Kenilworth (a favourite haunt of the ladies for get togethers outside of playing time!) - http://www.harringtonsonthehill.com/
