The women travelled to Leeds for their second NVL fixture of the season. With players missing, the major decision of the day was to play with a libero hence no substitute and gamble on no injuries! The early exchanges were even but quietly reassuring for Riga as Jules and Anca settled-in despite little training.  At 13-11, Ana put the pressure on Leeds from the service line and Jules hit cross-court for a winner to give Riga the edge. Jules continued the good serving on the next rotation and suddenly the set was over, 25-16.

Ladies beat Redhill in 1st game of the season

Written by

Full of optimism for the first game of the season the women travelled to Stourbridge to play Black Country Redhill Tigers.

Going in with strong defence and attack from Claire and  Ana on the wings Riga took an early lead. This meant the rest of the set was played with confidence allowing Mim and Clare to work together and run some perfectly timed slide hits. With this good front court play was a long run of serves from Ana leading to us winning the set 25-7.

On Friday the West Midlands ladies squad travelled to Alcester for a game re-arranged from March.  The ladies started slowly allowing Alcester to take an early lead as Riga struggled to get its passing unit into the flow.  Good work at the net from Melissa and Jane K through the middle kept Riga in the game as the teams traded points.  Ginny distributed the ball well and found Jayne and Jules through four but Alcester took the set.

Great finale as Riga women just fall short

Written by

At the end of a fantastic season, Riga women went into the final match against the champions, Oxford, with promotion still to play for. A Riga victory combined with defeat for Sheffield in their last match would see Riga sneak second place on set difference. But Riga could not have chosen a more difficult opposition – Oxford were worthy league winners having lost only once in the season...

Ladies defeated by Sheffield

Written by

On Saturday 8 March Riga ladies hosted Sheffield at Alan Higgs.  Having had a close game v Sheffield earlier in the season and both teams being near the top of the league, it was all to play for.

Riga ladies travelled to Loughborough this weekend to face Loughborough in the National Shield Semi-final.  It was a re-run of last year's semi-final where Riga also faced Loughborough.  Having lost to Loughborough in the league the week before, Riga were keen to get off to a strong start.

Women hold their nerve to win on the road again

Written by

Riga travelled to bottom of the table, Northampton, and were made to work hard for a 3-1 victory. Kat travelled but was feeling unwell so Anca replaced her in the middle. Whilst lacking in height and hitting power, Northampton have a reputation for great back court defence and this performance was no different.
