CUP FINALS for WM women

Written by

The WM women need YOUR support.  They play in the West Midlands Cup final on Saturday the 6 June.  The game is 9.30 am in Walsall and all spectators from Club members, friends and family would be most welcome to help the women in their quest to win the title.

Riga's West Midlands women's side ended the league season with a win and a loss last week securing them 3rd place in the league.  On Wed 29th the team made the long trek to Cleobury (almost in Wales!!).  Inevitably the travelling took its toll and despite some good hitting from Hannah and some strong serving from Anca the girls lost the 1st set 19-25.

Having drawn a veil over last week’s aberration, the Riga party bus (well, two small cars) travelled to the North East for the weekend, and the final two games of the season. After sight-seeing the North York Moors during a 4 hour drive, the team arrived at lunchtime in Whitby to take on North Riding Eagles. After gifting the home team the first four points, Riga’s serve took over, with Sylwia and Claire in particular causing problems for the home team.

WM women through to Semi-finals of Cup

Written by

Riga WM ladies travelled to Tamworth this weekend for the quarter finals of the West Midlands cup.  Having played Tamworth recently in the league Riga know it would be a touch match but were determined to match them with team spirit.  The first set saw the teams trade point for point.  Tamworth got into a rhythm and had a strong run of serves which soon saw Riga trailing.  Ginny distributed the ball well with good hitting from Jayne and Melissa Riga fought back but it was too late and the first set slipped away.

Eagles brought to ground

Written by

Riga entertained North Riding Eagles in this NVL Div 2 clash with the teams level in the table and in contention for a top 4 finish. Riga pressed hard from the start and took 6 points from Milly’s service rotation with Claire and Bella attacking clinically. Riga’s serve continued to put pressure on their opponents throughout the set forcing the visitors to attack from off the net and Jules and Ana coped easily in defence. With a 12 point lead, Netti replaced Bella. North Riding also made a substitution and the new player, Sechel, served well to take 6 points and put some pressure on Riga. But Netti made two good defensive plays and Milly finished the set with a spike and block, 25-17.

West Midlands ladies remain unbeaten in 2015

Written by

On Tuesday the West Midlands side faced Telford who also play in National League Div 3 so the team was expecting some tough opposition.

However in the first set Riga were dominant and Telford did not get a look in. Sandra served 8 points in a row and some strong hitting from outside players Malin and Annalaura enabled Riga to take the first set 25 – 14.

NVL women back on track!

Written by

Day 2 of a double-header weekend saw Riga take on Black Country Redhill at home on Sunday. With Sylwia unavailable, Milly came back into the squad fresh from England Junior camp but started on the bench as Claire switched to middle. The first set started quietly until Bella struck four strong serves to give Riga the edge. Clare followed suit shortly afterwards and Riga controlled the set without ever dominating, winning 25-19.
