Men's NVL get a win and ladies press on

Written by

Sunday saw the ladies play Sheffield followed by the men against London Lynx.  Both teams had played the weekend before with Riga losing each encounter so it was all to play for.  With the women up first they started off strong with good blocking from Mim and strong hitting from Jody.  Jules controlled the passing unit allowing Clare to use multiple options with Sophie hitting strongly in reverse.  But Sheffield's strong serving and four attack saw them take the set 25-20.

Tough day at the office for Riga NVL teams

Written by

With two NVL fixtures this Saturday there was plenty for Club members to come along and spectate and it was great to see some friendly faces. First up the ladies played Sunderland City Predators. The girls started strongly with good attacking from Sylwia and Alex. Jules ran a military passing unit giving Clare options but Sunderland fought back with strong serving and hitting and took the set 25-21.

Women lose to strong Sheffield side

Written by

Riga won the first set 25 – 22, with a strong performance from all. Riga pushed on after falling behind at the first technical but fought hard and came out on top winning the second technical time out. Riga improved throughout the set using a variety of spikes and tips allowing us to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the set. Mim took us back to the service line on match point where we took the first set to 25.

Ladies through to shield quarter final

Written by

The Shield competition game began poorly for Riga, losing several points in a row straight away. However, once they had tightened up their defence and found the holes on Wombourne’s court, they began to gain both points and confidence. Middle hitter Mim and setter Clare made a great team at the net, with Mim running slides to catch out the opposition’s block. Despite their improved performance, Wombourne were hot on Riga's heels until Sylvia’s tough serves allowed Riga to pull away by a few points, finishing 25-18.

Local Derby weekend sees mixed fortunes

Written by

This weekend saw the women play Birmingham followed by the men playing Black Country men each at Alan Higgs.  On this spooky Halloween evening both games went to five sets giving plenty of action.  The womens team came out on top after an epic fifth set.  The men's team couldn't quite clinch it in the fifth set.  See the facebook page for some videos of the mens game.

Manchester proves too far for Riga

Written by

The men had a very delayed start to their game last weekend in Manchester following the half term traffic on the M6 meaning delays and yet more delays.  This traffic paid its toll (mmm...perhaps we should have gone on the toll!) and Manchester won the game 3-0.  The women followed having had an equally tough journey and were faced with an equally tough game also losing 3.0.  Some pics of the men's team in action are below - click read more to view.

Tendring prove too strong for Riga men

Written by

Riga mens team's first home game of the season saw them hosting Tendring.  Tendring were last year's shield winners and consistently finish high in the league.  They also have a volleyball scholarship programme with the local University so were likely to have new signings which would strengthen them further still.

NVL ladies get a win against Nottingham Rockets

Written by

This weekend Riga ladies hosted Nottingham Rockets.  It's always a tight game against the local rivals so was sure to be a good match for the first home game of the season.  It was to be a quiet game as Mim had lost her voice (although coach Jon sympathetically (!) quipped "no calling from Mim though - suppose that's the same as usual!").

Riga ladies start the season in style

Written by

Riga ladies travelled up North for an away weekend for their first two games of the season. An early start and surprisingly for Jon all the team (well, barr Netti!) were waiting for him at the pick up point.
