Riga snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

Written by

Riga took on promotion chasing Manchester at home on Saturday looking to prove that they are better than their mid-table position suggests. It was an inauspicious start for Riga as Manchester raced into a 7 point lead and effectively killed-off the first set before it had begun. Things improved for the home team towards the later stages of the set as Jules found her feet returning as libero, and at least one or two serves made it into court! 11-25.

Comfortable win for NVL women

Written by

Riga made the short trip to Loughborough University on Valentines Day and despite just having 6 players, put together a strong performance to win 3-0. With Claire and Bella back as outside hitters, and Ana rejuvenated at opposite, the team had a balanced look about it. In the first set Riga took an early 5 point lead from Bella’s serves but let it slip and needed a stern time-out talk to re-focus. There were no alarms thereafter and Riga took the set 25-15.

Ladies win 5 set thriller v Birmingham

Written by

Saturday 31st January saw Coventry and Warwick Riga Ladies National League 2 women face Birmingham who were playing at home. Due to absences Riga fielded a squad of seven yet they were a determined crew.

The first set was close in score from the beginning to the end with Riga adjusting well to some new positions for the players. Riga served well from the beginning and Ana looked particularly lively yet Birmingham drew back by mid-set. Despite some good defence from Riga with effective blocking, the first set ended up 20 -25 to Birmingham.

Success for women in Shield

Written by

NVL Women win their first Shield game this weekend against Peterborough. Despite a score of 3-0, Riga didn’t show their best game against this team of Division 3. It is only at the end of the third set, for the last 10 points that Riga showed her true face thanks to a strong serve of Jules.

This weekend saw the ladies have a double header of home fixtures - Saturday v Nottingham Rockets and Sunday v Birmingham.  Although back up to full numbers the team were plagued by injury to Claire Tintillier's shoulder giving coach Jon less options.  The girls sided out straight away from Rockets serve and put on a few points until Rockets middle player served consistenty to give Rockets an early lead into the first TTO.

Riga exceed expectations against Super 8s’ Malory

Written by

Riga began the second round of the cup with an unconventional warm-up – one without a setter! (Clare spent the warm-up in the Tollbar roundabout road works!) But despite no warm-up, the first 2 points of the match were won by Clare's serve! Malory soon got into the swing of things and with a run of good serves and attacks, they lead 8-3 at the first technical time-out. However a fantastic run of 10 serves from Jules took Riga into the lead and forced Malory to take a time-out when they were trailing 12:13 and then to make a substitution at 12:15. Riga held on to the serve with good blocking from Anca and well-read defence by Netti. A mixture Riga's own errors and Malory's attack later on brought the set level and Malory went on to win 25-22.

NVL women beat local rivals Loughborough in 3

Written by

After failing to defeat Loughborough students last season Riga set out with determination to finally beat them. This attitude however, failed to transmit to the court where Riga appeared stationary, unable to control Loughborough’s serve. A few choice words of encouragement from coach Jon during a time out sent Riga back on court with renewed vigor. Netti took control of the pass, allowing Clare to set up a variety of attacks and Riga won the set 25:20.

Women take a lesson from deadly Durham

Written by

The women excitedly faced the challenge of high flying, Durham, a team destined for the Super 8s based on the import of American volleyball scholarship students. Early in the first set, Riga found the Durham serve hard to deal with, and effective attacks were difficult to create. Faced with a number of 'free' balls, Durham imposed themselves with powerful hitting and raced away with the set, 8-25.

Women beat York in under an hour

Written by

Under the watchful eye of Torsten (while Jon is on holiday), this weekend the Riga ladies travelled to York for the first round of the Volleyball England National Cup.  The girls arrived at the sports centre and were directed to "Tent 1".  An unusual name for the court we thought...until we got there - it was literally a tent!  And very cold.  After a long long warm up the starting 6 took to the court determined to come away with a win.
