Ladies lose out on a final place

Written by

Riga approached this match with the aim of being more aggressive at the net, serving flatter and harder, and continuing the excellent serve receive skills we demonstrated in last week’s win against Nottingham.

NVL women improve and claim important win

Written by

After three league defeats in a row, Riga travelled to Nottingham needing a victory to get their NVL season back on track. After a poor start which saw them trailing 1-6, Riga worked their way back with Mim hitting and blocking confidently and Netti passing well in defence. As the points levelled out there were several long exchanges with both teams covering well. But once Riga nudged ahead, Mim again proved her dominance with two kills to win the set, 25-18.

Women lose to strong Sheffield side

Written by

Riga won the first set 25 – 22, with a strong performance from all. Riga pushed on after falling behind at the first technical but fought hard and came out on top winning the second technical time out. Riga improved throughout the set using a variety of spikes and tips allowing us to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the set. Mim took us back to the service line on match point where we took the first set to 25.

Ladies through to shield quarter final

Written by

The Shield competition game began poorly for Riga, losing several points in a row straight away. However, once they had tightened up their defence and found the holes on Wombourne’s court, they began to gain both points and confidence. Middle hitter Mim and setter Clare made a great team at the net, with Mim running slides to catch out the opposition’s block. Despite their improved performance, Wombourne were hot on Riga's heels until Sylvia’s tough serves allowed Riga to pull away by a few points, finishing 25-18.

Local Derby weekend sees mixed fortunes

Written by

This weekend saw the women play Birmingham followed by the men playing Black Country men each at Alan Higgs.  On this spooky Halloween evening both games went to five sets giving plenty of action.  The womens team came out on top after an epic fifth set.  The men's team couldn't quite clinch it in the fifth set.  See the facebook page for some videos of the mens game.

NVL ladies get a win against Nottingham Rockets

Written by

This weekend Riga ladies hosted Nottingham Rockets.  It's always a tight game against the local rivals so was sure to be a good match for the first home game of the season.  It was to be a quiet game as Mim had lost her voice (although coach Jon sympathetically (!) quipped "no calling from Mim though - suppose that's the same as usual!").
