Womens (NVL) (60)

This weekend saw the NVL host Leeds (ladies) and Melton Lions (men) at Alan Higgs on Saturday.  The ladies were up first against Leeds and shot out of the blocks with strong serving all round.  Excellent passing from Jules gave Sophie lots of options and Enrica won point after point through four.  The Riga ladies dominated the set and a time out for Leeds at 10- 23 down was too late as Riga took the set from Sylwia's serve 25-12.

Riga edge epic encounter! Featured

Riga travelled to Keele University looking to extend their winning start but all too aware that NSVC represented a step-up in the level of opposition they had faced so far. Jackie started Riga off well with some strong serves and mid-way through the set, spikes from Alex and Mafalda put the visitors in control. Jackie’s defence and some good blocking off service runs by Sylwia, and then Mafalda, gave Riga the 1st set 25-22.

Riga lack fluency but win again Featured

Riga had defeated Loughborough relatively easily in the cup just 13 days ago but in this game Riga discovered that students can learn very quickly, especially under the tuition of coach Bertrand Olie! The first set was an even exchange of mistakes until Riga got to grips with their serves. First Clare and then Alex hit their targets and from 12-10, the students found the set lost, 25-14.

NVL Ladies end season on a high

Written by

The ladies played Team Sunderland who are pushing to finish second in the league. It was always going to be a tough game but the girls had a goal to have beat everyone in the league once during the season save for league champions Sheffield.

The girls shot out the blocks immediately applying the pressure. Sunderland called a time out at 2-7 down but could not disrupt Clare's run of 6 serves as Riga took an 11-2 lead. From there Riga were in control with Julie and Enrica commanding the pass giving Clare options to find Alex and Sophie who hit clean winners. Excellent blocking from Mim and Sylwia kept up the pressure and Sunderland's second time out came at 8-22. Riga took the set 25-10.

Resurgent Riga win again

Written by

On the back of 3 wins in a row, Riga women travelled to Newcastle Staffs in confident mood, but wary of a team they have struggled to beat in recent seasons. Riga started well, with Alex hitting strongly through 4. Sophie L. placed a cross-court spike perfectly from opposite, and then served two aces to put Riga in command of the set. More service pressure from Enrica and Mim saw Riga ease through the set 25-16.

A Riga Winning weekend

Written by

This weekend saw Riga host four NVL games at Alan Higgs Centre.  Saturday both teams played Darkstar Derbyshire and on Sunday Riga ladies played Tameside and Riga Men Sunderland City Predators.  It was a weekend with all to play for at a crucial point in the season.

Riga ladies hosted Wombourne this weekend in the next round of the Volleyball England National Cup.  Riga ladies got off to a non-steady start with a run of service errors in a row - fortunately mirrored by Wombourne!  Eventually the ladies began to find their form.  Pass from stand-in libero Jackie saw Sophie able to distribute the ball well with attacks from Bella and Marcela.  Strong serving from Mim put Riga nicely ahead.  A double substitution saw Clare and Alex join the fray at 23-14.  Clare served two aces and then set to Alex to enable her to clinch the winning point - what a double substitution!

Riga fight to five against Darkstar

Written by

After the 'short' 50 mile trip (depressingly, the closest away game of the season by some distance!), Riga started the match well. The first set was decided relatively early when at 11-11 Bella hit a cross-court spike to bring herself to the service line. This produced a run of 4 points for Riga from some great covering by Alex and attack wins for Mim and Clare. Strong blocking from Sylwia and Alex took Riga further ahead and as Derby threatened a recovery, an ace from Slywia sealed the set for Riga.

On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death the ladies host Newcastle Staffs in the final game of this season.  In fair Alan Higgs, where we lay our scene, the two teams met and in the warm up were both alike in dignity.  Powered on by a Purple play list in honour of Prince.
