Men beat Manchester in 5 set thriller! Featured

Written by

Having avoided automatic relegation the boys have two games left and need to win both to avoid the play offs (one being against league leaders Sheffield). To set up that clincher though they would first need to face InterVolley Manchester which was going to be a tough ask in any event.

Under Stand-In coach Coach Jon's watchful eye the boys had a nervous start. The teams traded points and Riga missed opportunities with service errors. There was a little bit of crowd disturbance that was quickly dealt with and the game resumed! From a time out at 13-20 down the men started to close the gap but Manchester took the set 25-21.

Manchester proves too far for Riga

Written by

The men had a very delayed start to their game last weekend in Manchester following the half term traffic on the M6 meaning delays and yet more delays.  This traffic paid its toll (mmm...perhaps we should have gone on the toll!) and Manchester won the game 3-0.  The women followed having had an equally tough journey and were faced with an equally tough game also losing 3.0.  Some pics of the men's team in action are below - click read more to view.

Tendring prove too strong for Riga men

Written by

Riga mens team's first home game of the season saw them hosting Tendring.  Tendring were last year's shield winners and consistently finish high in the league.  They also have a volleyball scholarship programme with the local University so were likely to have new signings which would strengthen them further still.

Men have a comfortable win against Birmingham

Written by

Following on from their win v Essex last weekend, Riga men hosted local rivals Birmingham at the Alan Higgs Centre.  The team was bolstered by Alassane's return to the squad for this season but with the absence of Jack Young, Tom stepped up and filled in as libero.

Men beat York to progress to R2 of National Cup

So, finally the national volleyball league cup game arrived!

This time Coventry & Warwick Riga men’s team played at our home venue.  The men’s volleyball squad arrived early to the home venue so that the new players could get used to the sports hall.   In addition, the team had two new players: Julius from Germany as outside hitter; and Piotr from Poland as an opposite player. This gave Coach Freddie an opportunity to have more options to run different tactics and combinations.

Men's first game of the season v Leeds

Written by

The men travelled to Leeds last weekend to play their first game in NVL Division 1.   The game was immediately after the ladies game - so after a quick shower and some food the girls were on the side line to give some support.

With a number of new signings coach Freddie had options and the starting line up included a mix of old a new together with the first game of the Young brothers playing together (Jack as libero and Tom through four).  The team settled down and traded points with Leeds.  The pass enabled the team to open up options utilising four and middle well.  It was a scramble to the end and Leeds narrowly stole the set 25-23.
