Over the Bank Holiday weekend Riga West Mids ladies travelled to Hereford for their last league game of this season. Having only lost one league game all season (right at the start to Hereford) there was all to play for with the winner likely to be league champions 2018!

Riga were missing some key players, Suzy was getting married (fair excuse!),Hannah and Saria are injured and Maria and Ana had other commitments. But the side arrived in good spirits (not so much good time!) and ready to fight for the title. Riga came out the blocks strongly. Marta commanded the pass giving Clare options so Zofia and Edina could find winners through the middle. A run of serves from Jules saw Riga take a lead which was cemented by a kill from Natasa through opposite. The whole team kept the ball alive and continued to apply the pressure and take the set 25-17.

Riga retained that momentum into the second with strong serving throughout. Netti swept up the back court and Marta killed the ball through four. Coach Nick was a happy man as Riga powered through to take the set 25-12.Β

Into the third set and Riga went out a little complacent and Hereford showeed they were made of strong stuff. Nick called a time out when the girls were 4-0 down. Back to court with renewed determination the side out Β and the girls were 8-4 up at the technical. From there the teams traded points and despite blocks from Jules and Edina Riga could not break away. This set was going down to the wire. But Riga kept cool under pressure, hit their serves when it mattered and took the set 25-23.Β

A great all round team performance with Marta earning MVP. So the ladies take the 2018 league champions title but training is far from over for the girls. They have the cup semi final v Tamworth on 20 May at home. A win there would see the girls compete in the final to try and accomplish the elusive league and cup double! Get yourself down to Alan Higgs Sunday 20 May to cheer them on #goriga
