This weekend the NVL teams each hosted Team Sunderland on Saturday at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry.  The ladies kicked off first and started strongly with good serving putting the visiting team under pressure. Jules provided an excellent first ball and allowed Sophie to use all options bringing Mafalda and Sylwia into the game through the middle attack.  Riga soon finished off the set 25 - 20.

In the second Riga continued the assured performance.  Sophie L attacked well through four with Enrica and Susy attacking consistently through four.  Sophie Z found some winners with a deep second ball over.  Team Sunderland showed determination with some strong runs of serve but Riga remained dominant to take the set 25-14.

The third set saw Riga take a more rocky start.  The passing unit seemed to think the job was done and took their foot of the gas making Clare work hard to get the ball into an attacking position.  Team Sunderland hit the technical time out first at 8-7.  But some strong words from Coach Jon and the team took back to the court with renewed determination.  Clare found the hitters and Sylwia was on fire with her block!  Jackie passed well and gave a good swing hit through four to keep the opposition guessing .  Riga closed out the set and the game 25-15.

MVP - Sylwia

Next up the men.  Team Sunderland are top of the mens division so it was going to be a tough game - but the men played them the week before in Sunderland so knew a little about the opposition.  The men fought for point after point with libero Charlie covering and defending well.  Robert found Matt through the middle and Tom and Chris through four for some great hits.  But Sunderland's fire power saw them take the first set 25 - 18.

In the second set Paul attacked well through opposite and Vasco had some good kills through four.  But the team lacked consistency and Team Sunderland took advantage of this to win the set 25.21.  The third set went much the same way and despite some great points and scrambles it was ultimately Team Sunderland that came out on top to take the set and the match 25-19.

MVP - Charlie.

It was Charlie's last game for the team having finished his studies Charlie returns to China.  The boys went for the traditional farewell drinks and presented Charlie with a small volleyball signed by the squad - something for Charlie to take home to China with fond memories of his time at Riga.  He will be missed.

On Sunday the West Midlands ladies travelled to Birmingham Mets in the West Midlands league.  The girls put in a great strong team performance to notch up point after point.  Under coach Nick's watchful eye the girls  put in the plays and took the match 3-0 adding to their recent string of wins and keep them in a good place in the league.

Of course, also adding to the success of the ladies side of the Club this weekend #thisgirlcan
