Riga men played Newcastle Staffs this weekend - looking for a win to get through to the next round in the Volleyball England shield competition to face Melton Lions.  A change from our usual venue - this match was hosted at Centre AT7 as Alan Higgs wasn't available.  The team settled into the game slowly and got their rhythm.  Charlie passed the ball expertly giving Robert options and enabling him to find Ro through the middle for some killer hits.  Tom dominated through four and strong blocking from Matt and Paul saw Riga take the set 25 - 14.

Into the second set and Staffs fought back matching Riga point for point.  Strong serving from Chris put Riga back in the game.  Miguel provided superb cover as Robert set Tom up for strong attacks from 4.  Edwin attacked through opposite to win points and another strong run of services from Chris and then Matt at the end of the set saw Riga pull away before they were forced to win match point twice after a change in referee decision following a Riga player owning up to touching the ball on a block.  The boys made sure of it on second time of asking though and took the set 25-20.

The third set started with new signing Vasco coming on to the court and winning the first point of the set (perhaps not in the most traditional style, but they all count!).  The Riga team pulled together under the watchful eye of Coach Tamara and took an early lead.  Matt stepped up to the service line and from then on there was no looking back as he racked up 7 points in a row.  The Riga team continued to attack the ball well and show their dominance in an all round team performance as they took the set 25-8.

The boys move on to face Melton Lions in the next round of the Shield playing away on 2 December.
