Riga had defeated Loughborough relatively easily in the cup just 13 days ago but in this game Riga discovered that students can learn very quickly, especially under the tuition of coach Bertrand Olie! The first set was an even exchange of mistakes until Riga got to grips with their serves. First Clare and then Alex hit their targets and from 12-10, the students found the set lost, 25-14.

The second set was livened up with a handful of attack kills from Mim and Mafalda but neither side could find fluency in attack. Riga’s consistency in the passing unit was the difference as they clinched the set 25-21. Riga gained control of the 3rd set through Marcela’s serving, leading 12-5, only to be pegged back to 12-12 as the students attacked through the middle and gained confidence. In the end it was left to Sophie Z. to restore order with a series of unreturnable serves, and the victory was sealed, 25-21.

MVP – Sophie Zillman
