The first league match of the season saw Riga travel to newly promoted Telford. Riga applied early pressure from the service line with first Alex and then Sylwia forcing Telford errors. Mim and Marcela were clinical in attack and the block was dominant in defending a run of 6 serves from Sophie Z. Riga took the first set 25-14.

The second set followed a similar pattern with Riga establishing control with service runs from Enrica and Alex. Whenever Telford had the opportunity to serve, accurate passing from Jules, Alex and Enrica enabled Sophie to pick and choose her attackers. Telford could not contain the power hitting from Mafalda and Alex, and Riga won the set 25-16.

In the 3rd set, Riga went to sleep on serve receive and when they woke up they found themselves trailing 4-9, and facing a Telford team galvanised in defence. Riga fought their way back through Alex and Enrica’s hitting to level at the second TT, only to slip behind 17-19. At which point, Sylwia arrived to serve and killed-off any hopes of Telford comeback with 6 points in a row. Third set to Riga, 25-21, and a 3-0 victory.

MVP – Alex Smith
