Resurgent Riga win again

On the back of 3 wins in a row, Riga women travelled to Newcastle Staffs in confident mood, but wary of a team they have struggled to beat in recent seasons. Riga started well, with Alex hitting strongly through 4. Sophie L. placed a cross-court spike perfectly from opposite, and then served two aces to put Riga in command of the set. More service pressure from Enrica and Mim saw Riga ease through the set 25-16.

Riga went behind early in the second set as Newcastle found their own serving potency, but the visitors gradually regained the lead with sustained, controlled volleyball. Enrica and Jules defended expertly, and Sophie Z. varied the attack to keep Newcastle guessing. At 21-19, Jackie replaced Alex as a service substitution, hit two aces and guided Riga to the set win, 25-20.

For the third set, Newcastle shuffled their pack, moving opposite to outside, and middle to opposite. This improved the home team defence and despite repeated good attacks, Riga found it harder to put the ball away. Bella came on in the opposite position and spiked through the block, and Sophie Z. won points with the second ball to keep the score close, but Newcastle held on to take the set 23-25.

Into the fourth set and it was Riga’s turn to make changes. Clare came on to set, with Bella replacing Sophie,  and Jackie on for Alex. The impact was immediate as Riga raced into an 8-2 lead behind great serving from Mim and dominant blocking from Slywia. Bella weighed-in with a block and Jackie rolled a spike down the line to stretch the gap to 18-10. Mim nonchalantly tipped for a winner as the resistance from the home team fell away and Riga claimed the set, and victory, 25-14.

A fantastic team performance, four wins in a row, and up to fourth in the league!

MVP – Sophie Z.
