Riga fight to five against Darkstar

After the 'short' 50 mile trip (depressingly, the closest away game of the season by some distance!), Riga started the match well. The first set was decided relatively early when at 11-11 Bella hit a cross-court spike to bring herself to the service line. This produced a run of 4 points for Riga from some great covering by Alex and attack wins for Mim and Clare. Strong blocking from Sylwia and Alex took Riga further ahead and as Derby threatened a recovery, an ace from Slywia sealed the set for Riga.

Dozing and dozy at the start of the 2nd set saw Riga slump to 12-19 as Derby made some powerful hits from opposite. A time-out forced a serve error and Sophie Lomax promptly served an ace to start the Riga comeback. Mim made a kill-block and Marcela spiked for further points to close it to 16-19. Riga made further gains but eventually faced set point at 22-24. This was saved by an Alex attack which set the scene for Sylwia to serve 3 aces and snatch the set 26-24!

The third set was even throughout with Riga's best work via blocks, serves and Alex's attacks. But from 18-18, Riga let it slip with a couple of overpasses, and balls dropping mid-court as players stood and watched - a sure sign of tiredness and of things to come.

The fourth set was dominated by Derby. Riga's attacks lost their edge and were easily recycled and the home side punished the hapless visitors, 9-25. And so to the decider. Riga re-grouped on the back of Jules' passes and nudged ahead through Bella's serves. Alex used the last of her energy to put Riga clear at 12-9, but Derby responded with a run of serves to 13-13, and then a good attack to claim the victory, 13-15.

MVP - Clare
