The Shield competition game began poorly for Riga, losing several points in a row straight away. However, once they had tightened up their defence and found the holes on Wombourne’s court, they began to gain both points and confidence. Middle hitter Mim and setter Clare made a great team at the net, with Mim running slides to catch out the opposition’s block. Despite their improved performance, Wombourne were hot on Riga's heels until Sylvia’s tough serves allowed Riga to pull away by a few points, finishing 25-18.

The second set began much more strongly, as a result of accurate passing from Netti, Jody and Jules and clever attacks from Bella. Riga’s blocking was much more accurate in this set, Clare even managed to secure a winning block! Sophie cemented Riga’s win with a run of tricky serves, which caught out Wombourne’s defenders. Coach Jon Chetham was so pleased with Sophie’s serves that at one point he celebrated as if he’d served it himself! The set finished a comfortable 25-10.
Riga entered the next set with new-found confidence, and scored a run of points to help them take the lead. Serving from Clare and Hannah helped widen the gap, while spiking from Jody went straight through the opposition’s block to win us more points. With the score at 20-10, the win seemed certain, however, several consistent, accurate serves from the opposition caught our defenders out, and we failed to build successful attacks. After allowing Wombourne to creep up to 15 points, a spike from Sylvia managed to break the run, and we secured the final five points to win the set.
Riga move into the next round of the Shield, playing the quarter final against either Loughborough or Peterborough on 31 January 2016 at Centre AT7.
