Match Reports (98)

Please find below our latest match report

Both the ladies and the mens Division 3 teams have recently got their first double wins.  The ladies game first with a 3-1 win v Northampton and then a 3-1 win v Nottingham Rockets.  It was quickly followed up by the men who got a 3-1 win v Stowmarket and a 3-2 win (17-15 in the last!) against Newcastle Staffs.  The double wins have helped both teams consolidate their positions in the league tables.  It's no mean feat for the ladies as it is their first season in National League and the girls have shown they can get the wins and have great fun.

The men have one double header left this season and the girls two double headers (four games) so still lots to play for.  The womens division 2 team are also in a good position mid-table with two games remaining this season.  #goriga

Introducing the new Division 3 ladies team Featured

Written by

This year has seen Riga enter a new Division 3C ladies team in the National a league. The ladies have had several years of success in NVL Division 2N with a separate ladies team in West Midlands league. So we decided to push on and enter NVLDiv 3. First game was away in Norwich and the girls won 3-1 against Ashfied Vipers before going down 3-0 v Norwick Spikers (or Spiders if you are Jules!). The last set was 29-27 showing how the Riga ladies improved as the game went on. So much to play for as the season continues! #goriga

Over the Bank Holiday weekend Riga West Mids ladies travelled to Hereford for their last league game of this season. Having only lost one league game all season (right at the start to Hereford) there was all to play for with the winner likely to be league champions 2018!

End of NVL season round up Featured

Written by

The NVL season has reached its end.  Here's a quick round up of the action from our two NVL teams.  The West Midlands ladies still have a few games left to play yet and a shield semi-final (and let's hope a shield final!).

This weekend the NVL teams each hosted Team Sunderland on Saturday at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry.  The ladies kicked off first and started strongly with good serving putting the visiting team under pressure. Jules provided an excellent first ball and allowed Sophie to use all options bringing Mafalda and Sylwia into the game through the middle attack.  Riga soon finished off the set 25 - 20.

This weekend saw the NVL host Leeds (ladies) and Melton Lions (men) at Alan Higgs on Saturday.  The ladies were up first against Leeds and shot out of the blocks with strong serving all round.  Excellent passing from Jules gave Sophie lots of options and Enrica won point after point through four.  The Riga ladies dominated the set and a time out for Leeds at 10- 23 down was too late as Riga took the set from Sylwia's serve 25-12.

Men through in Shield comp after 3-0 win

Written by

Riga men played Newcastle Staffs this weekend - looking for a win to get through to the next round in the Volleyball England shield competition to face Melton Lions.  A change from our usual venue - this match was hosted at Centre AT7 as Alan Higgs wasn't available.  The team settled into the game slowly and got their rhythm.  Charlie passed the ball expertly giving Robert options and enabling him to find Ro through the middle for some killer hits.  Tom dominated through four and strong blocking from Matt and Paul saw Riga take the set 25 - 14.

Riga edge epic encounter!

Written by

Riga travelled to Keele University looking to extend their winning start but all too aware that NSVC represented a step-up in the level of opposition they had faced so far. Jackie started Riga off well with some strong serves and mid-way through the set, spikes from Alex and Mafalda put the visitors in control. Jackie’s defence and some good blocking off service runs by Sylwia, and then Mafalda, gave Riga the 1st set 25-22.

Riga lack fluency but win again

Written by

Riga had defeated Loughborough relatively easily in the cup just 13 days ago but in this game Riga discovered that students can learn very quickly, especially under the tuition of coach Bertrand Olie! The first set was an even exchange of mistakes until Riga got to grips with their serves. First Clare and then Alex hit their targets and from 12-10, the students found the set lost, 25-14.

Riga open with strong performance

Written by

The first league match of the season saw Riga travel to newly promoted Telford. Riga applied early pressure from the service line with first Alex and then Sylwia forcing Telford errors. Mim and Marcela were clinical in attack and the block was dominant in defending a run of 6 serves from Sophie Z. Riga took the first set 25-14.
