After playing xford in a five set match, a tired squad then faced Nottingham Rockets who had shown in their game v Oxford that they were a clever team.  With Ana as libero the passing unit worked well allowing Clare to use options.  Sophie hit well through two and Britt and Mille won a string of points at four.  Clare had a run of seven serves and Riga were 17-7 ahead. Good blocks from Mim saw Riga close the set 25-12.

Ladies lose five set thriller v Oxford

This weekend the ladies had a double header playing Oxford and then Nottingham Rockets.  Oxford are also unbeaten in the league so it was sure to be a tight match.

The men faced Malory Eagles at home on Saturday.  After a feisty warm up Malory took an early lead showing an organised team that were out for a win.  Wyles connected well with Howe and edged up the points. Atzeni joined the fray at 10:16  but Malory powered on and took the set 25-16.

Some strong words from Freddie Fairbourn and Riga returned to the Court. Good passing from libero Young allowed Wyles to find Haensel well.  However, Malory maintained momentum and won the set 25-17.

Men lose 3-0 to Wessex

Riga men faced Team Wessex at home this weekend.  Wessex have been going from strength to strength after a very successful 2012/3 season.  The first set started steady and the teams traded points until Wessex made a break following a strong run of serves from Olympian Dan Hunter.  Riga's Andy Elliot and Matt Howe hit well but Riga struggled to recycle the ball against a strong Wessex attack and Wessex took the set 25-14.

Riga started strongly in the second set with a strong run of serves from captain Phil Wyles.  Good blocking from Torsten Haensel and Dan Turnbull in the middle meant the teams were operating point by point.  A run of serves from Wessex bought them back into the game but coach Freddie Fairbairn called a time out and that put an end to Wessex's service run.  A tremendous rescue from Phil Wyles and some good hitting from Francesco Atzeni saw Wessex forced into a time out at 23-21.  Wessex sided out and took the set 25-21.

An enthusiastic Riga ladies team arrived early for their first match of the new season; this was to be a National Cup match against York. Once the inside the sports centre thoughts were focused clearly on the match and the win that the ladies were determined to start the season off with. Captain Sophie Zillman made her expectations for promotion to National League Division One this year clear from the beginning, following a strong team performance last year which saw a number of new talented players join the squad.
