WM women through to Semi-finals of Cup

Riga WM ladies travelled to Tamworth this weekend for the quarter finals of the West Midlands cup.  Having played Tamworth recently in the league Riga know it would be a touch match but were determined to match them with team spirit.  The first set saw the teams trade point for point.  Tamworth got into a rhythm and had a strong run of serves which soon saw Riga trailing.  Ginny distributed the ball well with good hitting from Jayne and Melissa Riga fought back but it was too late and the first set slipped away.

Mid-season Mayhem Club social

We will kick off the night with a bowling challenge.  Arrive at Ten Pin Coventry (just off Junction 2 of the M6) at 6.30pm.  One game of bowling is £6.99 which includes shoe hire (don't forget to wear socks!!).

After bowling we will go for some food (and drinks!) at the Sparrow pub in Ansty (which is just a short drive from the bowling alley).

EVERYONE is welcome along with other halves/families.  The more the merrier.  Just email Clare (or use the Contact Us) function to let us know if you are coming to both bowling and dinner or just one or the other.

See you there!

This weekend Riga NVL ladies travelled to Ashcombe Dorking in Surrey in the next round of the Volleyball England National Shield.  Ashcombe play in Division 1 having recently been demoted from Super 8s.  Therefore, it was going to be a tough match for our division 2 ladies.

Christmas social

Tuesday saw the annual Christmas social.  With around 40 people coming along from across the Club it was a great opportunity to get to know new people and all share our love for the game!  Organised by Netti and Jayne we were divided into four teams for a mini-tournament with timed sets.

This weekend saw the ladies have a double header of home fixtures - Saturday v Nottingham Rockets and Sunday v Birmingham.  Although back up to full numbers the team were plagued by injury to Claire Tintillier's shoulder giving coach Jon less options.  The girls sided out straight away from Rockets serve and put on a few points until Rockets middle player served consistenty to give Rockets an early lead into the first TTO.

Our very own Freddie has recently been awarded Community Coach of the Year Award at the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards.  Freddie won the award through his contribution to coaching in volleyball.  It's a fantastic achievement and reflects Freddie's hard work and dedication in working with a number of groups - including many of us at Riga Volleyball.

On Tuesday evening the West Midlands ladies faced NEST as their next league fixture.  With an array of new players the team settled down but it was sure to be a close match.  The teams were matching each other point for point all the way through.  Riga missed opportunities to close the game out at the end of the fourth set as a strong NEST side hit well to take it into the decider.

A gutsy performance from Riga saw the girls fight to the end but ultimately NEST clinched it 16-14.  Click read more to watch the videos

Women beat York in under an hour

Under the watchful eye of Torsten (while Jon is on holiday), this weekend the Riga ladies travelled to York for the first round of the Volleyball England National Cup.  The girls arrived at the sports centre and were directed to "Tent 1".  An unusual name for the court we thought...until we got there - it was literally a tent!  And very cold.  After a long long warm up the starting 6 took to the court determined to come away with a win.
