New Coaching Role at University of Warwick

Our friends at the University of Warwick are currently looking for a new Coach for their volleyball teams.  It's a great role for coaches looking to get a bit more experience with some committed teams - and we thought it might be of interest to some of our members!  As you know, we work closely with the University and they host some of our training sessions outside of training times.  A number of our members are also studying at the Uni and playing in the Uni teams as well as for Riga.  All the details are available here - https://www.volleyballengland.org/about_us/about_us_/job_vacancies.  If you might be interested do get in touch!

This weekend saw the West Midlands Riga ladies team take on Tamworth in the West Midlands Cup Competition Final.  The team had built a steady run through to the final with some close games and tough opponents, but Tamworth were bound to be the toughest opposition yet - all to play for!  The match started strongly for Riga with Serving pressure from Susi and powerful hits from Sophie allowing Riga to take the first set 25 to 10.

Men beat Manchester in 5 set thriller!

Having avoided automatic relegation the boys have two games left and need to win both to avoid the play offs (one being against league leaders Sheffield). To set up that clincher though they would first need to face InterVolley Manchester which was going to be a tough ask in any event.

Under Stand-In coach Coach Jon's watchful eye the boys had a nervous start. The teams traded points and Riga missed opportunities with service errors. There was a little bit of crowd disturbance that was quickly dealt with and the game resumed! From a time out at 13-20 down the men started to close the gap but Manchester took the set 25-21.

NVL Ladies end season on a high

The ladies played Team Sunderland who are pushing to finish second in the league. It was always going to be a tough game but the girls had a goal to have beat everyone in the league once during the season save for league champions Sheffield.

The girls shot out the blocks immediately applying the pressure. Sunderland called a time out at 2-7 down but could not disrupt Clare's run of 6 serves as Riga took an 11-2 lead. From there Riga were in control with Julie and Enrica commanding the pass giving Clare options to find Alex and Sophie who hit clean winners. Excellent blocking from Mim and Sylwia kept up the pressure and Sunderland's second time out came at 8-22. Riga took the set 25-10.

Jon Chetham - Coach of the Year 2017!

Volleyball England awarded Jon Chetham the title of Coach of the Year 2017 at the National Cup Finals on Saturday.  The Volleyball England annual awards include a number of categories and recognise the success of so many volunteers within the Sport of Volleyball.  Coach of the Year is a hotly contested category and Jon fought off competition from over 20 other entries to take the title this year.  He was presented with his award at the National Volleyball Cup Finals in Kettering on Saturday by Janet Inman.  After receiving his award Jon then presented the winners medals and trophy to IBB Polonia who had just beaten Sheffield in a thrilling final.

CONGRATULATIONS JON!
